How Lords Work
We’ve shaken up the standard Total War formula of Agents and Generals, and woven characters more deeply into campaign and battle. There’s also a shedload of new customisation options for them, including deeper skill trees, and a mix of common and legendary weapons, armour, items and mounts to equip them with.
We’ve started talking about these more recently and some questions have popped up we’d like to try and answer.
Please bear in mind that the below info is about a game that is work in progress and subject to change, if you would rather not hear about features that might change, please look away now!
LordsCharacters essentially come in three flavours. The first type is Lords, and these guys can perform a number of roles in your campaign.
They can be employed as Generals, which in many ways work like generals in other TW games; they lead armies around the campaign map and in battle, inspiring and bolstering troop morale. Every army requires a general in order to deploy on and move around the Campaign Map.
Unlike the generals of old though, they’re considerably more combat orientated and can be either melee or magic focussed. Wizard Lords will have access to a magical lore specific to their race, and will draw on the Winds of Magic to cast their spells. Melee Lords are hardier and more powerful fighters and you’ll want to make use of that prowess in battle. There will also be some Lords that operate like hybrids of the two, exhibiting strengths in both melee and magic.
Lords can also be placed into other roles as well. For example, as Admirals they’ll lead your fleets around the oceans (though all naval engagements will be auto-resolved, as given how land battle-focused Warhammer is, we’ve concentrated on those).
You might also appoint a Lord as an Overseer. They are then assigned a province to govern, reacting to challenges by handing down commandments to direct the efforts of the populace, and through the application of their own skills. Should the provincial capital be attacked, the Overseer will personally lead the garrison troops in their efforts to defend the walls. Though garrisons in general will be better equipped to deal with enemy forces regardless.
HeroesThe second character type is Heroes. Like the agents in previous Total War games, they perform a variety of strategic functions on the campaign map, such as assassination, sabotage and so forth, but when attached to armies, they now appear in any battle as a standalone unit. Like Lords, they can be melee or magic focussed, and in some rare cases, such as the Empire Warrior Priest, be a hybrid of the two. But the crucial point here is that they can now get stuck in and actually fight, and bring to bear all the skills, abilities and items you grant them as they level up.

Legendary LordsThe third character type is Legendary Lords. Now these are the big guys, the named characters from Warhammer Lore, and the paragons of their races.

Your chosen Legendary Lord will act as a general, and is a remarkable warrior in his own right. The big difference with Legendary Lords over Lords is that alongside the standard Strategic, Tactical and Battle skills branches, they also have a Unique Skills branch to their skill tree that is completely personal to them, and this is where a good deal of the narrative in Total War: WARHAMMER stems from. So, for example, when Ungrim Ironfist levels up, you’ll get an allocation of skill points to spend in any of his branches. Spend them in the Unique Skills branch, and you’ll begin to unlock quests that are unique to Ungrim. These quests will take you through a series of tasks and battles, and culminate in Quest Battles – the kind of bespoke, hand-crafted battles we’ve been showing off recently. The reward will be one of the legendary magic items only Ungrim has access to in the tabletop game. These items are bound to the Legendary Lords and can never be lost, though if that character has a choice of items, you can equip him as you see fit.
In fact, all character types can be equipped with up to six magic items, including armour, weapons, enchanted items, arcane items, and talismans, many of which will be familiar to Warhammer players as they’re right out of the rulebooks. These items are earned as rewards for victory in battle, and in some cases, even stolen from defeated lords (look out for skills that increase the chance of your character being a thieving git).
Given that so much of the lore and backstory of Warhammer Fantasy Battles stems from its characters, we really want to do them justice and Ungrim’s a great example. To say he’s a conflicted character is something of an understatement. As the Slayer King, his two roles are at odds; while he’s charged with the success and wellbeing of his people, he’s also oath-bound to seek the biggest, meanest monster he can clap eyes on, and die while engaged in glorious battle against it. As you might imagine, this conflict tears at him, and through his unique skills tree, along with the all the quests, quest-battles and legendary items it generates, we really get to do dig deep into his character and his story.
Legendary Lords and Starting a Campaign GameIn the first game, each playable race will come with a choice of two Legendary Lords to start a campaign with – for example the Dwarfs get Thorgrim Grudgebearer or Ungrim Ironfist.
The Legendary Lord you choose to lead your Campaign can make a big difference to your strategy, as each brings a series of unique benefits that might positively (or negatively) influence the units you recruit, the tactics you employ and the forces you deploy. A Dwarfen campaign under Ungrim, could have quite a different attitude to one under Thorgrim. Wifislax mac download.
However, any other Legendary Lords in your race, including the ‘official‘ race leaders (who will always be around to engage in diplomacy) will join in your campaign later, even if you don’t choose them to lead your efforts initially.
Expect to see more Legendary Lords released for playable races after launch as Free Content and DLC.

MountsWhichever mounts your character has unlocked through their Skill Tree (or quests), you’ll be able to select from as mounts for them while on the Campaign Map. You have to do this before battle is joined though, no riding around on a horse and then swapping to a gryphon when you get ambushed…

Battle StandardsAs mentioned at EGX, there will be the opportunity to unlock/earn/steal Magic Banners for your armies. However, it’s worth pointing out that these will be indicated in battle through a gloriously (or disgustingly, depending on your race) embellished banner indicator above the unit who has it equipped.
There are currently no plans to include actual standard bearers as physical models/units within the game; we took the decision that we’d rather spend the time needed to animate and model all those different combinations of races and troops, and make more units and characters instead.
Adventure Ho!Worth pointing out that don’t always need to have troops in your army. Because Lords are so mighty, and can have Heroes and other Lords join them on the campaign map, you could build a party of adventurers rather than an army.
But what trouble could such an expedition get in to? Hmm….

Unique lords are lords who are unique and special in some way, and usually only available if certain conditions are met. Some are only available in campaign mode, and some are even considered Legendary Lords even though you can't start as them.

The Empire[edit | edit source]
- Boris Todbringer is the ruler of the Middenland faction in the Old World and Mortal Empires campaigns. He also leads the Middenheim faction in the An Eye for An Eye mini-campaign. He is considered a Legendary Lord, but the only way to obtain him is to confederate with his faction while playing as the Reikland or The Golden Order He is available for custom battles and multiplayer if you win the An Eye for An Eye mini-campaign.
Vampire Counts[edit | edit source]
- The Red Duke is the ruler of the Mousillon faction in the Old World, Season of Revelation, and Mortal Empires campaigns. He is considered a Legendary Lord, but the only way to obtain him is to confederate with his faction while playing as Sylvania or The Barrow Legion faction. This can sometimes be difficult as he starts a good distance away from Sylvania and may get wiped out before you can initiate diplomacy with him. However, for The Barrow Legion, he is likely your closest ally and even if you do not confederate, he should still be kept on good terms simply to avoid having yet another enemy. The Red Duke is available for custom battles and multiplayer if you win the Season of Revelation mini-campaign.
Warriors of Chaos[edit | edit source]
- Sarthorael the Everwatcher is the ruler of the Chaos Gathering faction in the Old World campaign, which is renamed to the Horde of the Ever-Watcher in Mortal Empires. However, he only leads these factions if you are playing as the Warriors of Chaos. Otherwise he just appears as part of the Warriors of Chaos during the Chaos Invasion. He is never playable in the campaign. He is available for custom battles and multiplayer if you win the Old World campaign.
Norscan Tribes[edit | edit source]
- Azrik the Maze Keeper is a Lord of Change that can join your Norsca faction if you reach maximum Allegiance with the Eagle. If you reach maximum Allegiance with a different god, he may instead appear as an enemy leading the Challenger of the Eagle. If he joins your faction, he is automatically maximum level, and you cannot view or change his skills or equipment at all. He has a different color scheme than Sarthorael, and his magic is a combination of the Lore of Death and the Lore of Metal, whereas Sarthorael just has the Lore of Metal. He is not available for custom battles or multiplayer.
- Surtha Ek is the ruler of the Varg faction in the Old World and Mortal Empires campaigns. Prior to Norsca becoming a playable race, the Varg were one of only two Norsca factions that didn't require being awakened by the Warriors of Chaos. As such, he built up a bit of a reputation for taking over the north and then waging war against the Empire, usually with a peculiar excess of chariots. He is only playable by confederating with his faction while playing as a Norsca faction, and is not considered a Legendary Lord. In Mortal Empires, if you defeat Settra the Imperishable with an army lead by Surtha Ek, then Surtha Ek will receive a special trait. Likewise, Settra can get a special trait by defeating Surtha Ek. He is not available for custom battles or multiplayer.

High Elves[edit | edit source]
- Alastar the White Lion was created as part of a Make-a-Wish foundation request. He is available to be recruited in the Eye of the Vortex or Mortal Empires campaigns when playing as the High Elves. He costs Influence to recruit, but is one of the best things to spend your influence on in the early campaign. He comes with a modified list of skills, a special trait, and pre-equipped with his own legendary items. He is now considered a Legendary Lord. He is available for custom battles but not multiplayer.

They just have to research the relevant Technology (or 'Dynasty' as the Tomb Kings campaign refers to them) and the lord will be recruitable. He is not available for custom battles or multiplayer.
- Rakhash of the Second Dynasty is available in the Eye of the Vortex or Mortal Empires campaigns to players playing as a Tomb Kings faction. They just have to research the relevant Technology (or 'Dynasty' as the Tomb Kings campaign refers to them) and the lord will be recruitable. He is not available for custom battles or multiplayer.
- Thutep of the Third Dynasty is available in the Eye of the Vortex or Mortal Empires campaigns to players playing as a Tomb Kings faction. They just have to research the relevant Technology (or 'Dynasty' as the Tomb Kings campaign refers to them) and the lord will be recruitable. He is not available for custom battles or multiplayer. He is possibly the brother of Nagash, but it is uncertain as another character lays claim to being that particular Thutep.
- Lahmizzash of the Fourth Dynasty is available in the Eye of the Vortex or Mortal Empires campaigns to players playing as a Tomb Kings faction. They just have to research the relevant Technology (or 'Dynasty' as the Tomb Kings campaign refers to them) and the lord will be recruitable. He is not available for custom battles or multiplayer.
- Setep of the Fifth Dynasty is available in the Eye of the Vortex or Mortal Empires campaigns to players playing as a Tomb Kings faction. They just have to research the relevant Technology (or 'Dynasty' as the Tomb Kings campaign refers to them) and the lord will be recruitable. He is not available for custom battles or multiplayer.
- Alkhazzar II of the Sixth Dynasty is available in the Eye of the Vortex or Mortal Empires campaigns to players playing as a Tomb Kings faction. They just have to research the relevant Technology (or 'Dynasty' as the Tomb Kings campaign refers to them) and the lord will be recruitable. He is not available for custom battles or multiplayer.

- O'Bones Macdonald]] is available in Eye of the Vortex or Mortal Empires to players playing as the Vampire Coast faction. They just have to research the Infamous AdmiralTechnology and the lord will be recruitable. He is not available for custom battles or multiplayer.
- Burke Black is available in Eye of the Vortex or Mortal Empires to players playing as the Vampire Coast faction. They just have to research the Notorious AdmiralTechnology and the lord will be recruitable. He is not available for custom battles or multiplayer.

Unique Dwarf slayer Lord that is recruitable for Bretonnia, Dwarf, and Empire factions through the Gotrek & Felix Offer Their Services dilemma/quest marker. He shares exp he gains with other lords and will be replaced by a player chosen lord when his duration runs out.
Never Implemented[edit | edit source]
Within the game files are several unique lords that were seemingly never added to the game in any usable way.
Warriors of Chaos[edit | edit source]
- Since the launch of the first game there has been entries for a generic Lord of Change as a unique lord, but so far only the named lords Azrik the Maze Keeper and Sarthorael the Everwatcher are able playable. It's unclear if this unit was ever intended to be usable or if it was just created to be a mold for the named Lords of Change as the unit has the same stats as Sarthorael. The generic Lord of Change probably will be playable in the third game, however.
Beastmen[edit | edit source]
- The release of the Call of the Beastmen DLC added Graktar to the files, with separate stats from a generic Beastlord. In the lore, he was the leader of the Warherd before Khazrak the One-Eye beat him in battle and broke off one of his horns, then exiled him. A Beastlord named Graktar does appear in the An Eye for An Eye campaign leading the Ripper-Horn Tribe but it's unclear if he uses these stats or those of a generic Beastlord. He also appears in one of Khazrak's quest battles. It's possible he was in consideration to be an unlockable lord for custom battles and multiplayer.
Bretonnia[edit | edit source]
- The release of the Realm of the Wood Elves DLC added Armand d'Aquitaine to the files, with separate stats from a generic Bretonnian Lord. He is a character that originated in the Bretonnia army book. He does appear in the Season of Revelation campaign leading the Aquitaine faction, but it's unclear if he uses these stats or those of a generic Lord. He's not playable in any way as you can only play as Wood Elves in that campaign. It's possible he was in consideration to be an unlockable lord, or perhaps in early development he was going to be the third playable Lord instead of Alberic de Bordeleaux.

Warhammer 2 Legendary Lords
- The release of the Realm of the Wood Elves DLC added Darthon Ironbeard to the files, with separate stats from a generic Dwarf Lord. He is not known to have originated from the lore, and unlike these other characters he does not appear in the game in any form. It's possible he was meant to lead the Karak Ziflin faction during the Season of Revelation campaign, but that wouldn't necessitate him having unique stats. It's possible he was in consideration to be an unlockable lord for custom battles and multiplayer.
Greenskins[edit | edit source]
- The release of the Realm of the Wood Elves DLC added Snorko One-Finger to the files, with separate stats from a generic Orc Warboss. He is not known to have originated from the lore. He does appear in the Season of Revelation campaign leading the Skullsmasherz (who have a different ruler in other campaigns), but it's unclear if he uses these stats or those of a generic Orc Warboss. He is not playable in any way as you can only play as Wood Elves in that campaign. It is poosible he was in consideration to be an unlockable lord for custom battles and multiplayer.
